About Us
Northgate Community Centre is a welcoming hub in Canterbury, Kent, offering space for local groups, activities, and events. We bring people together through social gatherings, classes, and community services, while also offering advice and guidance that helps residents feel supported. Our centre provides a friendly place to connect, learn, and belong.
Our Story
The Northgate Community Centre in Canterbury was originally known as the Garrison Theatre. It was part of a military barracks that was built on land developed by William Baldock, a property developer in the late 1700s. This historic building was repurposed in 1997 into the Northgate Ward Community Centre and since has served Canterbury's Northgate Ward for over 27 years under the registered charity 'Northgate Ward Development Group'. The building now hosts a thriving community hub, welcoming locals to social groups, classes, a café, support services, and more, providing a warm, open space dedicated to connection and support.
Our aims and objectives:
-
To serve all residents within the city of Canterbury and surrounding areas, particularly those living within the Northgate Ward.
-
To operate without distinction of age, sex, race, colour, disability, political affiliation, or religious belief, ensuring equal access and opportunity for all members of the community.
-
To associate and collaborate with statutory and voluntary organisations in a common effort to benefit the local community.
-
To promote and support educational opportunities that enhance knowledge, skills, and lifelong learning for residents.
-
To support initiatives and activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional health and wellbeing.
-
To provide or facilitate support for individuals and families experiencing poverty, hardship, distress, or illness.
-
To provide facilities and opportunities for recreation and constructive leisure-time activities in the interests of social welfare.
-
To encourage participation, inclusion, and cooperation among residents to strengthen community spirit and mutual support.
